The Band

Picture
The Deaf Pilots are a very energetic throw back to the times of psychedelic rock. These three talented musicians alternate instruments throughout their original tunes like California Woman or No Name, a crowd favorite, that will leave you saying, “I haven’t found a rockin’ band that makes me dance like this since Hendrix!” This young and talented group is made up of Derek Julian (Vocalist, Bassist, Guitarist, Keys) who is sure to get you out of your seat and dancing around, Andrew Watt "Bronco" (Guitarist, Bassist) who will blow your mind with his face-melting licks and cool grooves and Ryan Fairley (Vocalist, Bassist, Drummer) who’s flying fingers will create such an uncontrollable beat you won’t be able to help but groove around the dance floor!

These talented musicians all began at a young age, varying widely between backgrounds. As Ryan, the  drummer, puts it, “The only formal teaching I got in
drumming was in middle school in the symphonic and marching band.” Now Andrew, he started playing music after his mom got him his first Jimi Hendrix CD. "I always just played to pass the time with buddies and then eventually it developed into getting into a band. The rest is history." It wasn’t till Derek was in 6th grade that he picked up his first guitar. “One day, my friend Brad showed Juke Box Hero, by Foreigner, and from that moment on, Rock and Roll continues to be my favorite,” exclaims Derek as he tries to pinpoint when he found his style of music. However, all of these aspiring young musicians stuck to their instruments and expanded in becoming more versatile; being able to play guitar, drums, bass, and sing. Because they like to practice their skills on each instrument, it is not uncommon to find the group playing musical chairs, sometimes even in the middle of their songs! As Lauren Beaven, from the newspaper, The Orion, so eloquently puts it, “The Deaf Pilots accomplished catchy, original music with only an electric guitar, bass, and  drums, choosing to stick to the essentials without losing versatility.”

The Deaf Pilots are excited about the feedback from their shows, as well as the fans enthusiasm. Their fans are more entertained with each show as the band continually improves upon their original work in a stylistic and entertaining manner. They will soon be coming out with new music videos and a new CD in Chico, CA. Also, be on the lookout for The Deaf Pilots performing their new tunes live in the Chico area, which will include songs like Ship without an Anchor and Down in Flames.
